Ceramics

Some of my student work.

"The Frenchman" is a Face Jug. Traditional face jugs were generally grotesque ceramic faces with exaggerated features that held strong alcoholic beverages. "The Frenchman" is wearing a beret, in which the button is the stopper for the opening. For a brief history lesson on Face Jugs, check out http://www.kuehnpottery.com/facejughistory.htm

"Sesen" This ceramic piece was made based on the egyptian perfume bottle. Egyptian athletes would sometimes carry small perfume bottles tied around their wrists. This piece is a much bigger version. The method used on Sesen is called sgraffito. I carved flowers into the glazed unfired form. Once the piece was carved and clear glazed, it was kiln fired. "Sesen" is the egyptian word for the lotus flower, which is their symbol of the sun.

"Blue Peanut" This was the first form I ever made using clay disks and a clay stamp. I used circular clay disks with a design stamped on each disk and built the form. I used two different glazes to make the color of this piece. It makes a beautiful flower vase!

"Noisy Egg" This is a ceramic noise maker. Inside of this fired orb are tiny clay beads that make noise when the orb is shaken around. It was salt fired in a wood burning kiln to achieve earthy tones and a shine without any glaze.

"Candy Bowls" These two bowls are small and unique. I carved designs into them prior to glazing. The blue bowl has a crystal glaze. Crystal glaze has little crystals of glaze mixed with another glaze color. When fired, the crystals expand, creating unique colors and designs. The grey/brown bowl has a glaze that turns one color when thin, and another color when thick.
